Apologies for the (very) slow start to 2016 on this here internet space. To say 2016 has gotten off to a rough start for me would be an understatement, but that’s a blog post for another time. The good news is I’m back and I’m excited to share some new work with everyone. First up is this Springsteen concert from January at the Verizon center here in Washington, D.C. I’ve shot Springsteen 4 or 5 times at this point,…
Another year is in the books and it’s time to reflect and prepare for 2016, which will be my 10th (!!!!) year of concert photography. 2015 was another great year, I was very happy to be able to shoot quite a few of my favorite bands, including Noel Gallagher, RIDE, Morrissey, Luna, My Morning Jacket and The Strokes. I also expanded (and diversified) my client base by becoming a wire photographer for ZUMA Press and Corbis and covering local…
The annual Jingle Ball is always a fun but hectic night. 8-10 acts doing short sets with very little turn around time, plus red carpet duties. The star power was down this year from previous years – Nick Jonas skipped our date for some reason which meant there were a lot of YouTube phenoms in the lineup – but I did get to see Tove Lo for the third time this year so that’s a plus. She was…
Pretty much every year end list for 2015 has Summertime ’06, the debut album by Long Beach, CA rapper Vince Staples somewhere near the top and after his performance at U Street Music Hall it was easy to see why. Hew as cool, calm and collected on stage, prowling left and right and had the crowd eating up his every move. There was even a photo pit! A first for me at U Street Music Hall. SEE…
This was a tough gig to shoot. A two song shooting limit at a seated theatre with a stationary performer meant very limited options as far as sightless and shooting angles. To top it off, Newsom went to the piano at the back of the stage for the second song, so she was hidden by stage gear for a third of our allowed shooting time. The quietness of her show is also limiting. I shot on quiet mode but…
What do you get when you put Roger Waters, Billy Corgan and Tom Morello on stage with a bunch of wounded war veterans? An incredible memorable gig and a very emotional night. This was a very special gig and I was go glad I was able to be in the room covering it. Every year Music Heals puts on a benefit concert for MusiCorps, an organization that uses music therapy to help veterans recovering from wounds sustained in…
This was a fun show in a weird venue. I’ve seen more than a few rock shows at the Lincoln since it re-opened in 2013 and most of them have worked but this one really didn’t. This was a great example of a high-energy show where the band wasn’t getting the reciprocal energy from he crowd they were looking for. At one point in the show Yannis basically said “I want to get crazy in here but I…
I’ve been on a serious soul/R&B kick the latter part of this year (I’ll publish my favorite albums list a bit later but if I was honest, I listened to A LOT of James Brown this year) so it was natural that I’d be in the house when Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings played D.C. a week ago. This was a holiday show in conjunction with the group’s holiday album and it was awesome and so much fun.…
