This year’s edition of the Trillectro Festival took place in Columbia, MD at Merriweather Post Pavilion, a stark contrast to the previous venues, all located inside the District proper. As a result, the special feel of the festival was lost, as it was mostly attended by (what seemed like) teens from the suburbs. The genre twisting lineups at the previous editions of this fest have been a source of local pride (and with good reason!), but the lineup this year was pretty generic. In the past I could always point out a standout set by an act that was on the verge of blowing up (David Heartbreak and Schoolboy Q in 2012, A$AP Ferg in 2013, both Migos and Rae Sremmurd last year) but there wasn’t anything like that this year. Local rapper Babeo Baggins was the best thing I saw this year. I should note I have lots of respect for the organizers of the festival and I can only imagine the amount of work that goes in to pulling off an event this big. Here’s hoping that they can get the festival back on track next year. I’m pulling for them.
