9:30 Club Concerts

Santigold @ 9:30 Club

I’m a big Santigold fan and was super excited to shoot this show. I listen to Santi’s debut album all the time and really dig her latest release, The Master of my Make Believe. Her shows are always lots of fun and have lots of things going on on stage with her dancers and musicians. This show was no different (although it would have been nice to shoot the horse costume they brought on stage around the 5th song!).…

The Beach Boys @ Merriweather Post Pavilion

Four minutes and fifty two seconds. That’s how long the first two songs lasted at the Beach Boys show at Merriweather Post Pavilion last week. I know this because that was our allotted shooting time. First two from the crowd. There was no pit so we were allowed to shoot from wherever we wanted in the GA pit as long as we weren’t blocking anyone’s view in the crowd. That severely limited our options, obvs. I ended up taking a spot…

USMNT v. Brazil @ FedEx

One of the things I am most proud of during my tenure at DCist is establishing a working relationship with US Soccer. The first few times I attempted to get credentials they told me they didn’t credential online only outlets but around 2009 they changed their policy and ever reached out to me to get me to come cover a game at RFK.  Unfortunately I was getting married that night so I had to turn it down.…

Concerts U Street Music Hall

Yo Gotti @ U Street Music Hall

This was the type of assignment that I hate to love. A hip-hop show that runs 90 minutes late, with an unruly crowd and a performer that only riles them up more. I was miserable waiting for this show to start, but once it did, I had a great time fighting off the crowd and shooting at the same time. Seriously, the girls up front were climbing over me to try and touch Yo Gotti. It was…

Concerts Howard Theatre

Kid Ink @ Howard Theatre

Can’t say I know much about Kid Ink but I wanted to take this assignment so I could check out the newly reopened and renovated Howard Theatre and I was not disappointed. They really did a great job with that place and I can’t wait to go back and see another show there. As for Kid Ink, he’s an up and comer that raps about tattoos instead of women and guns. There’s a niche for everyone I…

Arenas & Sheds Concerts featured Verizon Center

Radiohead @ Verizon Center

I was pretty excited about this on a few levels. First of all, it’s Radiohead! Secondly, my first ever gig for the Post was shooting Radiohead at Nissan Pavilion in 2008, so covering this gig had a bit of a full circle feel to it. Back then I wasn’t 100% happy with my photos (I was SO NERVOUS at that gig!), and this time I was determined to be prepared. I studied setlists and video from previous…

Lady Antebellum @ Merriweather

This was my third time shooting Lady Antebellum over the last two years. Their stage set up has changed somewhat but their show hasn’t. All of their shows are soundboard shoots, which severely cuts down on the types of photos you can get, but to the group’s credit, the lights are generally very good and the three members of the band stand together for a good bit of the first tow songs, so group shots are plentiful.…

Sleigh Bells @ Verizon Center

Sleigh Bells landed the opening slot for D.C.’s portion of the Red Hot Chili Peppers tour, bringing the duo back to town just a few weeks after their March show at the 9:30 Club. I said most everything I needed to say about the band in that post, so just enjoy these photos. Lights for this gig were less strobe-y than their usual treatment, which meant a somewhat less frenetic shoot, especially where lead singer Alexis Krauss…
