This was my third time shooting Lady Antebellum over the last two years. Their stage set up has changed somewhat but their show hasn’t. All of their shows are soundboard shoots, which severely cuts down on the types of photos you can get, but to the group’s credit, the lights are generally very good and the three members of the band stand together for a good bit of the first tow songs, so group shots are plentiful.
The soundboard at Merriweather isn’t too far away from the stage, so a rented 300mm/2.8 did the trick for this show. We were stationed directly in front of the sound and lighting guys, both of who got a little grumpy when I stood on my stool to shoot. If your sound and lighting techs need a clear view of the stage to do their jobs, why are photographers placed in front of them during our shooting time? Sometimes I think tour managers and bands don’t think these things through AT ALL.
The band’s show was very upbeat and Merriweather was absolutely PACKED from the front row all the way over the top of the lawn. This show was also on the annual “Wine In The Woods” festival, so everyone was nice and lubed up by the time the band took the stage.
