Four minutes and fifty two seconds. That’s how long the first two songs lasted at the Beach Boys show at Merriweather Post Pavilion last week. I know this because that was our allotted shooting time. First two from the crowd. There was no pit so we were allowed to shoot from wherever we wanted in the GA pit as long as we weren’t blocking anyone’s view in the crowd. That severely limited our options, obvs.
I ended up taking a spot beside the last row of seats in the GA pit on the stage right side. This was Brian Wilson’s side and what’s the point of shooting The Beach Boys if you don’t have a good line of him? I stuck with my 70-200/2.8 for this gig because there wasn’t enough time to switch lenses and there wasn’t any sense shooting wide since most of those photos would be the seated crowd. As usual, the lights were wonderful. The generally are at Merriweather.
