I know 2014 is still relatively young, but this was by far my favorite shoot of the year. It’s obvious touring with David Byrne rubbed off on St. Vincent, as evidenced by her gig last Saturday at the 9:30 Club. The last time she was in town, her show was pretty straightforward, just her shredding on her guitar. This time there was an elaborate lighting set up, some dance moves and a whole bunch of other new…
2013 was a great year for me, personally and professionally and was my most successful year ever as a photographer. In addition to my regular concert workload for the Washington Post, I had a few magazine spreads over the course of the year, took on a number of new clients like Red Bull and Levi’s and did a ton of event work. I was also named one of Complex Magazine’s Top 50 Concert Photographers Right Now, which…
This was a pretty great show by a great performer that has an incredible back story. Hailu Mergia is a very well respected musician from Ethiopia that was huge in the ’70’s but nowadays drives a taxi in the Washington, D.C. area. The Post has more on his story. Mergia is back playing gigs every now and then and his show on the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center was very well attended and sounded brilliant. Definitely…
I’m a bit late on these photos (they are from December), but that doesn’t take away from Ex Hex’s great set opening for The Hives at the 9:30 Club. Opening for the best band in the world is no easy task, so it was great to see a local band get a shot and perform admirably. Ex hex is the latex band from Mary Timony (ex-of a ton of bands, most recently Wild Flag), and they sound…
I’ve been waiting a few years to see White Lies in concert. They haven’t played many shows in the US, and only two that I know of in the D.C. area. One at the Black Cat a few years ago on an NME sponsored tour and once opening for Kings of Leon at Merriweather. I couldn’t make either, so last week’s show at the 9:30 would be my first-ever time seeing them. Verdict: They were pretty good,…
The Post rarely covers metal shows, so naturally I get very excited when I see a metal show pop up on their concert schedule. Deafheaven got a ton of buzz last year with their album Sunbather, which was on pretty much every year-end Best Of list on the internet. This show was at Empire down in Springfield, VA, a venue I had only shot at once, for a not very well attended hip-hop show. I knew this…
Courtney Barnett is an Aussie singer/songwriter that has generated quite a bit of buzz by releasing a series of well-recieved E.P.’s over the last year or so. I caught her debut show in D.C. at DC9 a week or so ago and really enjoyed her set. The Post described her set as having “a disheveled electricity that evoked Nirvana-“Unplugged”-plugged-back-in.” BUY PRINTS: Click on any image in this post or in the slideshow to purchase prints. This was a really interesting gig that turned into a fun assignment (despite the lack of a photo pit). Beach House, The Walkmen, Fleet Foxes, Grizzly Bear, Wye Oak and a few other bands got together and organized a short tour to pay tribute to Gene Clark’s seminal No Other album. Basically a bunch of people alternated singing the songs from the album while a supergroup-type band made up of members of all the bands I mentioned…
