I know 2014 is still relatively young, but this was by far my favorite shoot of the year. It’s obvious touring with David Byrne rubbed off on St. Vincent, as evidenced by her gig last Saturday at the 9:30 Club. The last time she was in town, her show was pretty straightforward, just her shredding on her guitar. This time there was an elaborate lighting set up, some dance moves and a whole bunch of other new wrinkles. And it was lots of fun to shoot. If Annie Clark is coming to your town, you need to shoot this show.
SHOOTING NOTES: The lighting set up for this gig is a bit weird, as Annie is lit mostly be her own lights (as opposed to the venue lights), which are positioned at the front and side of the stage. They are very bright and very intense, making metering off of Annie’s already pale skin quite difficult. Watch your exposure. Also the lights are very green and blue, with the occasional bit of white, so try and time your shots to get the best results. She dances and performs in the middle of the stage for the first song and then spends the next two behind the mic with her guitar.
