When I moved to D.C. in July 0f 2004 the very first show I saw in my new hometown was Ted Leo at the Black Cat. It was my second time seeing Ted and my first time ever at the Black Cat. Needless to say I have seen both many, many times since then (including last December when Ted played the Cat). So it was a big treat for me to get the opportunity to cover Ted’s…
Fashion For Paws is a yearly charity event put on by the Washington Humane Society that combines fashion, fund raising and furry friends. Prospective runway models each raise money in part of a competition and the winners get to strut their stuff down the runway. This year’s event took place at the Italian Embassy (which is absolutely gorgeous) and I was there covering the event for Washingtonian Magazine. This was my first time covering the event and…
Hometown hip-hop hero Wale is on a short eight date tour with Somali by way of Toronto rapper K’Naan and together with Tabi Bonney (another local) and John Forte, they played a sold out show at the 9:30 Club on Sunday. D.C. represented well with Bonney and Wale. That was my first time seeing Tabi perform and he killed it. I’m not sure how many of the (mostly white) teenagers in attendance knew who he was before…
Despite not going to Austin for SXSW, March was a busy month for me. The last of the 13 shows I covered this month took me to a venue I had never been to before. The Music Hall at Strathmore is located up in Bethesda and despite fearing the worst, we had an easy trip up there. I was bracing for an hour and a half but it took less than 30 minutes. Bonus. Wilco, of course,…
After spending the last few weeks in the clubs, it was a welcome change of pace to get to shoot a big rock show at the Verizon Center. I’d missed the last few shows at the Phone Booth (Jay-Z, Black Eyed Peas) due to scheduling conflicts, so I was very excited to shoot last night’s Bon Jovi show. I know Bon Jovi aren’t the coolest band around, but I have to admit that they put on a…
To say this was a tough shoot would be an understatement. Having seen The XX the last time they came through town at the tiny DC9, I knew ahead of time that they prefer to play in the dark. So I was leasently surprised when I walked into 6th & I Synagouge at 4 p.m. yesterday afternoon for the group’s matinee show, because there was a lot of ambient light in the venue from all the stained…
I had a tough decision last Monday. Megadeth at the 9:30 Club or Janelle Monae at the Black cat. I REALLY wanted to shoot Monae but ultimately decided to go for Megadeth because of the better lights and photo pit, which would mean less standing around before the show. And besides, you can never go wrong shooting a big metal show. While there was no shortage of guitar shredding, I was surprised at the lack of movement…
Seems like I only get good light to shoot one of my favorite bands if they are outside at a festival. Last night was the third time I have shot Spoon at a club and the results have all been less than satisfactory. The band played the first two songs lit by small Christmas type lights strung about the stage and the third was lit by some very harsh blue spotlights. Tough sledding for sure. I was…
