9:30 Club Concerts

Frank Ocean @ 9:30 Club

This was one of the hardest, if not THE hardest shoot I’ve ever done at the 9:30 Club. Everything about this show was last minute. At first Frank Ocean wasn’t going to allow any photogs, then we got word around lunchtime on the day of the show that they would allow myself and a house photog in. Then the shooting location had to be worked out. Soundboard, of course. We didn’t actually get our photo passes until…

Concerts Verizon Center

Jennifer Lopez @ Verizon Center

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this show, other than it would be a soundboard shoot. J Lo is touring with Enrique Iglesias for this tour, they are co-headlining but J LO performs last, and Enrique is famous for sticking the photogs at the very back of the venue. Luckily, for this show, we were stationed in front of the soundboard.   I rented a 300mm/2.8 for this gig, hoping that would be long enough…

The Importance of Backing Up Your Data

Dead iMac Hard Drive

Backup, backup, backup. And then backup your backups. It’s mantra that all the big-time photographers are always spouting, and with good reason. Backups aren’t a big deal until you need them, something that I found out first-hand last weekend. On Saturday I had just loaded a few GB’s of photos from Friday’s Identity Festival show at Jiffly Lube Live (yes, that’s the venue’s real name) and my iMac hung as I was making my selects in Photomechanic.…

Black Cat Concerts

These United States @ Black Cat

I’ve been a fan of These United States for quite some time and it was a real pleasure to finally get to cover them on behalf of the Post. I booked them to play DCist’s Unbuckled concert series way back in 2007 (along with Pela, who are making a lot of noise these days as We Are Augustines) and have been following their career ever since. They’re really great people and deserve all the success that’s coming…

Arenas & Sheds Merriweather Post Pavilion

Luke Bryan @ Merriweather Post Pavilion

I caught Luke Bryan opening for Jason Aldean at Merriweather over the weekend and I enjoyed his show. His stage personality was on the cheeky side and he looked lik he was having a lot of fun on stage. That’s always a good thing because it comes across in the photos. Even though I don’t listen to what passes as country music these days, I generally know one or two songs by the bigger country artists that I shoot.…

Arenas & Sheds Concerts Verizon Center

Robyn @ Verizon Center

Robyn’s slot opening for Coldplay was the just the latest in awesome indie pacts opening for one of rocks supposedly most boring bands. Say what you want about the band but they have a pretty great track record of picking great openers (Elbow, Idlewild, Santigold, The Flaming Lips to name a few and Frank Ocean is doing an upcoming European leg). Obviously since I am a big fan, I was very excited about seeing Robyn and she…

Coldplay @ Verizon Center

Somehow I had never had the chance to shoot Coldplay until their recent show at the Verizon Center. I tried to get credentials a few years ago but they didn’t give credentials to blogs back then, oh well. I know the cool kids don’t like Coldplay at all but I was generally excited about covering this show. I watched some videos of the first few songs of the band’s current show and couldn’t wait to see how…

Concerts Wolf Trap

Demi Lovato @ Wolf Trap

In many ways this was the perfect assignment. Big show, great lights, a name artist and great results. I can’t say I know much (or anything) about Demi Lovato, but I had a great time shooting this show. She’s a very energetic performer and I have a soft spot for women that are fans of the hair flip because that can only lead to EPIC HAIR SHOTS! Shooting conditions were the usual for Wolf Trap. We were…
