This was an unusual show for the 9:30 Club (and by that I mean they don’t book too many country shows there, and certainly not from artists the caliber of Mr. Yoakam) that was made even more unusual by the shooting restrictions for this show. Basically, the two limitations were I had to shoot from the soundboard and I could not be below eye level of Mr. Yoakam. That was a new one. Lights were fine, but…
The NBA Draft is one of my favorite days of the year and three years ago I talked my way into a dream assignment, covering the NBA Draft for True Hoop and ESPN.com. I had been talking to some of the True Hoop team about coming aboard as a writer, but the timing didn’t work out as just a month or so before the Washington Post committed to giving some steady work shooting concerts and I had…

This was easily one of the most fun shoots I’ve had this year. The crowd was SUPER amped, the band was just giddy onstage and I got to enjoy the biggest photo pit i’ve been in in recent memory. Lights were great and I got to take a boatload of photos of Jenny Lewis. What’s not to like? This show honestly had an amazing vibe. Everyone knew the setlist, they were basically playing Give Up with three…
I had really mixed feelings about this show. One one hand it was very exciting to shoot The National, a band I’ve been shooting regularly since 2006, headline a show at Merriweather on the heels of their latest album release. I’ve followed their career up the ladder, from the Black Cat to the 9:30 Club to DAR to Virgin Fest. I’ve also shot them at the Pitchfork Festival and ACL. On the other hand, they’re at the…
This show was a classic case of getting an assignment to cover an artist I had never heard of and totally enjoying their show. I knew nothing about Dawn Richard before seeing her last week, and when I read that her claim to fame was that she was part of Diddy’s reality show girl-group Danity Kane, lets just say I wasn’t expecting much. But I’m happy to say that Richard is the real deal. She knew how…
Patty Griffin, a grammy award-winning singer songwriter that may or may not be married to Robert Plant (she released an update to her website a few months ago saying they were married but Plant’s publicist issued a denial), played to a packed house at The Birchmere last week and I was there covering the show for the Washington Post. SHOOTING NOTES: This was a typical shoot at the Birchmere. Low light, with a limited number of angles…
I’ve been a Flickr member since 2005. It was where I really came into my own as a photographer, allowing me to grow, network and learn all sorts of things along the way. I mean, I went from this to this. It’s also a community I outgrew and left behind as I waited in vain for an update to the service. I stopped regularly uploading photos sometime in 2011. But late last month I decided to re-engage…
It takes a lot to get me to make the trek to Jiffy Lube Live in Bristow, VA. All-day shows on Saturday where the crowd arrives nice and early is a good start. I arrived at 8:30 for a 9p.m. set time and didn’thave to deal with traffic and nabbed a prime parking spot to boot! I was there for Luke Bryan’s headlining set for the 2013 WMZQ Fest. I shot Bryan last year opening for Jason…
