Smashing Pumpkins @ Lincoln Theatre

Here’s something most people don’t know about me. Before (What’s The Story) Morning Glory came out in late 1995, my favorite band on the planet was the Smashing Pumpkins. Gish and Siamese Dream pretty much soundtracked my first two years at college. I listened to those albums incessantly. I could not get enough. It helped that the Pumpkins were pretty good about playing North Carolina (where I grew up and went to school). I had seen them a few times before they got the headlining gig on the 1994 Lollapalooza tour. Then Melon Collie came out and I didn’t like it very much and Britpop happened, and the rest, as they say, is history. I still give Gish a spin every now and then but I can’t say I’ve listened to Siamese Dream much in a decade or so. That made this show all the sweeter. Bill Corgan performed much of that album acoustically at this gig and it totally reminded me why I fell in love with that album way back when. “Mayonnaise” in particular was absolutely beautiful. This was such a great show and it was nice to see Billy out there giving the people what they wanted so they could give it right back to him.

NYC Taper has a bootleg of this show from NYC at the Beacon Theatre that is very similar to the set Billy played in D.,C. You should check it out if you’re curious.
