It’s been way too long since I’ve seen The Soft Pack. I couldn’t get enough of their 2010 self-titled album. It’s been in heavy rotation since I discovered it. They have a new album out and played a show at the Black Cat backstage to play their new songs for a small, but very energetic crowd.
The band’s new direction added a new touring band member to the group (he plays saxophone!) and I went to the gig without hearing any of their new tunes. Their new material is a departure from their previous surf punk sound, but I really liked it. A few songs were very Smiths-y and that’s never a bad thing. I sincerely hope the band comes back through town one more time behind this album. I’d love to check them out again.
Lighting in the backstage was the usual treatment. One bright light in the center and a few fills on the side. Luckily, lead singer Matt Lamkin planted himself in the good light and by doing so, provided a nice contrast to the rest of the band, who were lit by the blue accent lights.
