Being my indie-rock loving self, I normally wouldn’t be very excited about shooting country star Vince Gill and his wife Amy Grant at a show. But if that show is happening at the Kennedy Center, well sign me up. I love shooting at new venues, especially one as famous and hallowed as the Ken Cen.
This show was a “songwriters in the round” show on behalf of Challenge America, an initiative to help injured veterans get on with their lives after coming home, featuring Gill, Grant, Darius Rucker, Alison Krauss, Michael McDonald and DanTyminski (he wrote O Brother Where Art Thou‘s “Man of Constant Sorrow”). Rules at the Ken Cen are VERY strict. Photographers were relegated to the very back of the room, forcing me to rent a 300/2.8 to shoot the show.
Lighting was very dark so I had to push the ISO and slow my shutter speed. All in all, a fairly challenging shoot but I was happy with the results. Be sure to check out J. Freedom Du Lac’s full review of the night over on Washingtonpost.com.
