This show was a classic case of getting an assignment to cover an artist I had never heard of and totally enjoying their show. I knew nothing about Dawn Richard before seeing her last week, and when I read that her claim to fame was that she was part of Diddy’s reality show girl-group Danity Kane, lets just say I wasn’t expecting much.
But I’m happy to say that Richard is the real deal. She knew how to work the crowd and the stage. She whipped the audience into a frenzy, despite it being a seated show. I typically cover half-full shows at the Howard, but this was one of the most energetic crowds I’ve seen there.
SHOOTING NOTES: This was a typical show at the Howard, decent front lighting but not much fill light. I usually stay on the edges for seated shows, but when Richard pretty much demanded that the crowd stand up during the first part of the show, I worked my way in and got a spot near the middle before circling back later in the show for some photos from the back bar.
