Al Green @ DAR

I was very excited to finally get to photograph Al Green last week.  He was originally scheduled to play a two night stand at DAR Constitution Hall Valentine’s Day weekend in February but he was forced to reschedule the show due to the snowpocalypse.  The result was a half-filled venue, but that didn’t stop The Reverend who gave it 110% despite being in his early 60’s. Needless to say, he’s still got it. Here’s the full photo…

U Street Music Hall Opening

Last night I had the pleasure of checking out the new U Street Music Hall just before it’s grand opening party featuring Aeroplane and Great Lake Swimmers. U Street Music Hall is owned and operated by DJs Will Eastman (above, right) and Jesse Tittsworth (left) along with some other investors. It’s a club made by DJs for DJs. Their sound system is INSANE. Bring earplugs. One interesting policy that will be enforced at the club is a…

The Soundtrack of Our Lives @ House of Sweden

Swedish rockers The Soundtrack of Our Lives played a special acoustic set at the House of Sweden here in D.C. before their regularly scheduled gig at the Black Cat later that night. Known all around for having one of the best live shows out there, I was interested to see how the band would handle a stripped down show in such a tight space. Even though the band was seated, they still played with their usual fire…

Editors @ 9:30 Club

Sunday night’s Editors show closed out a busy week of shooting for.  Normally I wouldn’t shoot five shows in five nights but that’s the way the schedule shook out.  I was very excited to see Editors, they’re one of my favorite bands and they always put on a great show at the 9:30 Club. And they did not disappoint this time. Sadly the lights for this show were just as bad as I’d been led to believe.…

John Mayer @ Verizon Center

I never thought I would be excited to shoot a John Mayer show, but after his recent Playboy interview where he ran his mouth off about all sorts of sordid subjects, Saturday’s show at the Verizon Center took a bit of an edge. The venue was packed to the gills with people, and Mayer responded with a great performance. I had heard lighting for this show wasn’t very good, but that was not the case. While there…

Trey Anastasio @ 9:30 Club

On this blog I talk a lot about the conditions I am forced to shoot under during the show, but for this gig, the challenging conditions occurred on the trip to the venue.  It was snowing in D.C. last Tuesday, our second major snowstorm in less than a week and it was hit-or-miss as to whether the gig was even going to happen.  But as often is the case, the band wanted to play, so out I…

Crate Digging at the D.C. Record Fair

I always say that Valentine’s Day is a retail holiday, and if that’s the case, where better to spend your money today than at the Black Cat for the D.C. Record Fair? 30 East Coast vinyl dealers set up shop in the main stage space and a ton of people came out to dig through some crates and pick up some new vinyl. As if the vinyl wasn’t enough of a draw, DJs for the event included…

Joe Pernice @ Iota

This was the first gig I shot solely with my new Nikon D3. Iota was the perfect place to try out my new rig in a demanding low light setting and I was not disappointed. I shot most of these photos at ISO 3200 and they look better than my 1Ds Mk II at ISO 1600. The set up for this gig was a bit different from most Iota shows in that it was a seated show.…
