Just a few days after shooting her at the Pitchfork Festival in Chicago, Robyn came through D.C. to play a sold out show at the 9:30 Club with her co-headliner Kelis. I wasn’t sure what to expect with the lights, but I was sure it wouldn’t be as easy as shooting her outdoors at a festival. I was right. Robyn was mostly lit by deep washes of yellow and a barage of strobe lights. Spotlight lighting on…
Arenas & Sheds Concerts featured Jiffy Lube Live
Brooks & Dunn @ Jiffy Lube Live
Posted on August 3, 2010
My mantra for shooting concerts in 2010 is “I love shooting country shows.” I’ve definitely come to see that arena-sized country shows consistently give me the best shooting conditions of any concert, bar none. Brooks & Dunn’s stop on their farewell tour at Jiffy Lube Live in Bristow, VA was no exception. There was no photo pit for this show due to the thrust that extended from the stage, which was a bit worrisome, but it ended…
Day one at Pitchfork was kind of a bore. Lots of acoustic guitars in the first few acts of the festival, which made Robyn’s swedish electro-pop all the more welcome. She and her band (consisting of two drummers!) took the late afternoon slot on the main stage and really woke the festival crowds out of their doldrums. The pit for this set was very crowded, but I still found room to move around and try and get…
Shooting the headliners for each night of the 2010 Pitchfork Music Festival meant playing by different rules than the rest of the bands on the bill. Photogs were split into two groups and given one song each instead of the normal three. This turned into a big mess during Modest Mouse’s set on Friday. The first group got an 8 minute song, the second only a 3 minute tune. I was in the second group and due…
Shooting the opening night of a new tour is always exciting, but it’s also a bit nerve wracking. Generally before I head out to a show at a bigger venue, I’ll peruse Flickr and my Twitter contacts and see who has shot the show and try and gauge the lights and stage set ups by the people that have already covered the tour. Obviously you can’t do that if a tour starts in your town so I…
I’ve seen the Wu-Tang Clan and its various members perform many, many times over the years and I have to say Raekwon’s set on Saturday at Pitchfork was one of the more lackluster efforts I have seen from them. Not that I can really blame him, he was on in the middle of the day and it’s was incredibly hot. His DJ was having problems with his laptop shorting out due to the heat, so the show…
I first caught Here We Go Magic a year ago opening for Grizzly Bear and absolutely fell in love with their brand of droney, folky funk-pop, so I was of course very excited to see them at Pitchfork. Sadly I was only able to stay a few songs, but I’ll get to see them in a few weeks when they play the Black cat here in D.C. I definitely recommend picking up either their self titled album…
Surfer Blood’s Astro Coast is definitely one of my favorite albums of the year and their set at the 2010 Pitchfork Music Festival was the second time I’ve caught them this year. The band look like they are all teenagers although at least two of them are over 21. The crowd at the B Stage swelled to capacity levels for their set, a sign of big things to come for these guys. Light at the B Stage…
