Unlike Lil Wayne & Rick Ross, both of whom basically walked around the stage while they rapped, Nicki Minaj gave a great performance during her short set on the “I Am Still Music” tour. It says a lot that you can see just how expressive Minaj is on stage, even from the soundboard. Without a doubt, the biggest hip-hop tour of the spring was the “I Am Still Music” tour featuring Lil Wayne, Rick Ross and Nicki Minaj. The tour rolled through D.C. at the Verizon center last week and yours truly was stationed at the soundboard with a 400mm/2.8. Yes, sadly this was a soundboard show. I got an email late in the day Friday telling me that I had a photo pass for the Atlantic Records showcase at La Zona Rosa that was supposed to feature Lupe Fiasco and Cee Lo Green, both of whom dropped off the bill, later to be replaced by B.O.B. and… Janelle Monae! After catching a bunch of bands at the Live4ever.com day party, I walked around the corner to The Phoenix to try and catch The Sounds before making my way to Lakeshore Auditorium to see The Strokes. The big ticket Wednesday night at SXSW was the NPR Music showcase, which featured two of the most buzzed about British bands at the festival, Yuck and James Blake.
