Arenas & Sheds Concerts featured Verizon Center

Nicki Minaj @ Verizon Center

Unlike Lil Wayne & Rick Ross, both of whom basically walked around the stage while they rapped, Nicki Minaj gave a great performance during her short set on the “I Am Still Music” tour. It says a lot that you can see just how expressive Minaj is on stage, even from the soundboard. Her outfit and hair, coupled with some decent lights and seemingly everywhere backup dancers, made for some great shots. Her set was a little…

Lil Wayne & Rick Ross @ Verizon Center

Without a doubt, the biggest hip-hop tour of the spring was the “I Am Still Music” tour featuring Lil Wayne, Rick Ross and Nicki Minaj. The tour rolled through D.C. at the Verizon center last week and yours truly was stationed at the soundboard with a 400mm/2.8. Yes, sadly this was a soundboard show. Lights were pretty average, although they were less than optimal for Lil Wayne’s set. There was a ramp jutting out from the stage…

Janelle Monae @ SXSW

Not sure what more I can say about Janelle Monae at this point. She’s a total superstar and I jump at any and all chances I have at shooting her. She is by far the most photogenic artist I’ve ever had the pleasure of shooting and I look forward to the stage in her career when she has decent lighting for her shows! Janelle was drafted in at the last minute as a replacement headliner for the…

B.O.B. and Wiz Khalifa @ SXSW

I got an email late in the day Friday telling me that I had a photo pass for the Atlantic Records showcase at La Zona Rosa that was supposed to feature Lupe Fiasco and Cee Lo Green, both of whom dropped off the bill, later to be replaced by B.O.B. and… Janelle Monae! But before Janelle took the stage, B.O.B. and  Wiz Khalifa had their turns. B.O.B. was pretty great. He’s got a very charismatic stage presence…

The Sounds & The Submarines @ SXSW

After catching a bunch of bands at the Live4ever.com day party, I walked around the corner to The Phoenix to try and catch The Sounds before making my way to Lakeshore Auditorium to see The Strokes. The Phoenix is a plush, velvety, bottle service type of club that was hosting the Mog showcases. A big stage with bright lights was set in the middle of the floor for the bands to perform on. The lights were pretty…

Pulled Apart By Horses & More @ SXSW

I went  the Live4ever.com British Music Day Party on Thursday because I was determined to see The Boxer Rebellion at least once while I was in Austin, and I did, but I left being much more impressed with another band on the bill. Pulled Apart By Horses were added to the day’s lineup at the last minute, after Frankie & The heartstrings were unable to make the trip to Austin due to visa issues. They played an…

Yuck & James Blake @ SXSW

The big ticket Wednesday night at SXSW was the NPR Music showcase, which featured two of the most buzzed about British bands at the festival, Yuck and James Blake. Yuck opened the show and played a fairly lackadaisical 8 or 9 song set. They seemed very nervous and it came across in their performance. I caught a bit of their set earlier in the day at the Mohawk and they seemed a little more sure of themselves. Hopefully they’ll…
