Wally De Backer, aka Gotye, is 2012’s breakout star with his smash hit “Somebody That I Used to Know” featuring Kimbra. He played to a very sold-out 9:30 Club last week, which was to my knowledge, his first show in D.C. His show was mostly built off the projections at the back of the stage. There was a tiny photo pit for us photographers, but the lack of space and amount of gear on stage made getting clean…
Anyone that knows more than a little about me knows that I LOVE OASIS and can be a bit obsessive about them. So obviously I was beyond excited at shooting the opening show of Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds latest North American tour last night at the Warner Theatre here in DC. I caught Noel last year at the Wang Theater in Boston, but went sans cameras just to enjoy the show and I had an absolute…
I knew what I was in for before I even stepped in the door for this show. Strobe lights, Marshall stacks and lots of headbanging. Sleigh Bells’ music is very in your face, and their live show really translates that on stage. With their strobe-heavy lighting, conditions for this show were less than optimal. I focused most of my time on Alexis, since she is the face of the band. She hardly ever stands still and when…
It seems like it’s been a while since I saw a band that really impressed me (granted, I don’t stick around for more than a few songs these days) but I saw two bands this weekend that I think everyone should check out. On Friday I headed down to U Street Music Hall to check out the early Fort Lean & The Postelles show. U Street has been doing rock shows the last month or so in conjunction with…
Andy Grammer in an up-and-coming singer/songwriter in the Jason Mraz vein and I got the chance to catch him perform a very energetic set a few weeks ago at Jammin Java. He was just announced as the opener for this summer’s Cobie Cailait and Gavin DeGraw tour, so I expect you’ll be hearing much more from him very soon. Most shows at Jammin Java are seated, so I was surprised when i showed up just before showtime…
Hot off his weeklong series of gigs at SXSW, The-Dream hopped on a plane last Saturday and eventually made his way to Silver Spring, MD for his show at the Fillmore. Other than his abbreviated set (10 songs in just over an hour) you’d never have known he spent the week in Austin performing late into the morning at various showcases. Primarily known for his songwriting and production skills, Terius Nash is no slacker in the performance…
A few weeks ago I got the chance to shoot Top Chef runner-up Bryan Voltaggio as he filled in for a week at Washington, D.C.’s Rogue 24. Rogue chef RJ Cooper underwent heart surgery so many different chefs around the country filled in for him in one week shifts. Voltaggio was extremely nice and very accommodating with his time. The food wasn’t too bad either.
