Arenas & Sheds Concerts Verizon Center

Mary J. Blige @ Verizon Center

I’ve covered Mary J. so many times I’m not sure I have anything new to say about her, other than I love her and will always jump at the chance to shoot her performing. She’s always on point and her set headlining the Verizon center (after an opening set by D’Angelo) was more of the same. Mary J. only allows two songs but if you work quick then you can get all the shots you need from…

D’Angelo @ Verizon Center

After a few false starts, D’Angelo has finally made good on his promises of a comeback and I’m very happy to report that he was in fine form opening for Mary J. Blige at the Verizon Center a few weeks ago. He began his set by walking through the crowd before making his way onstage and turning in a virtuoso performance filled with hits from his back catalog. We were allowed your standard first three songs for…

9/11 Anniversary

9/11 photos by Kyle Gustafson

Every year on 9/11 I make sure to link to my photos from that fateful day. In some ways, it was the day that started me down the path to being a photographer.  The events of that day changed my life in a lot of ways and it would take me a few years to get everything back on track. But that’s all relative compared to what other people and their families went through. Here’s a compendium…

My Morning Jacket @ Merriweather

Last summer’s My Morning Jacket show at Merriweather was my favorite show of the year ( and I got some KILLER PHOTOS) so of course I was very eager to do it all again last weekend. But last year’s show was so insanely great that there was no way this year’s show could top it. And it didn’t. It’s not that it was a bad show, it just didn’t blow me away like last year’s show. If…

Band of Horses @ Merriweather

This was perhaps the most beautifully lit set I have had the pleasure of shooting this year. Generally during a set we’ll get one or maybe two well lit songs to shoot, but this was three immaculately lit songs in a slow paced three songs that gave me plenty of time to move around and get some killer shots. And to top it off, during the third song, Ben Bridwell’s daughter ran on stage because she had…

Marina & the Diamonds @ 9:30 Club

Marina and the Diamonds Perform at the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C.

After a run of three weeks of bad/frustrating concert shoots, it was very refreshing to get a chance to shoot an artist like Marina & the Diamonds. She (the band is a single performer with a backing band, despite the name) was a dynamo on stage, changing costumes and working the crowd into a frenzy with her every move. Marina & the Diamonds is the new girl power. A less schlocky version of Katy Perry. Lights for…

Trillectro Festival 2012

Last weekend was a big one in D.C. The first ever Trillectro (Trill + Electro) Fest went down at the Half Street Fairgrounds in Southeast and although it had its share of problems, it was a lot of fun. The artists booked to play Trillectro was a very interesting experiment, a festival inside DC city limits consisting of  a combination hip-hop and electronic dance music (EDM). And it worked beautifully line-up wise. Other issues arose, however. Before…

Jason Aldean @ Merriweather Post Pavilion

Although I do not listen to country music, I love shooting country shows. The crowd is always super into it and the artists always make sure to give them a SHOW. There’s no half-stepping in country music. The fans will call you out. This Jason Aldean show lacked a bit on the show side of things, but made up for it in effort.  Aldean isn’t the flashiest of artists, he basically played his guitar and strutted around the stage…
