This was the start of a very unfortunate string of shows at the 9:30 Club with no photo pit. I didn’t know much about Matthew Houck going into this show other than his very well reviewed 2013 album, Muchacho, was incredibly well reviewed. A sold-out crowd was certainly ready for everything he threw at them. Performance-wise, Phosphorescent was pleasant enough, but The Washington Post said the show featured “mournful and achingly majestic modern country,” so you should…
This was my third time seeing The Pixies since they reformed about 10 years ago, and my second time shooting them. And once again, venue restrictions kept me from being able to get a good variety of photos, but at least we were granted use of the aisles during a very short first three songs. I was happier with those photos even if there are backs of heads in the frames. Oh well. The band was in…
Last summer I was given the opportunity to shoot the Station to Station show in Pittsburgh on behalf of Levi’s and it was one of the best assignments I had all year. Levi’s flew me up to Pittsburgh and put me in the same hotel the Steelers used before their season opening game against the Tennessee Titans. The gig itself was awesome, with No Age, Thurston Moore, Ariel Pink and others playing the Union Station train station…
This was my first gig of 2014 and my first gig at Gypsy Sally’s, a new venue that recently opened up in Georgetown. I liked the venue a lot, it’s like a grungy version of The hamilton. Lots of tables on different tiers in the back and plenty of standing room in the front. I would definitely go back and see a show there. In fact, I’d go see Amanda Shires there. I really liked her set.…
I’ve shot Jay Z plenty of times in the past, but it’s always an assignment I am excited to get. Jay has a host of hits any rapper not named Kanye would be jealous of and is comfortable in clubs or arenas. He’s always smiling on stage and anytime he’s on stage, it’s an event. But I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know. SHOOTING NOTES: First two songs and they go pretty quick. The stage…
My second assignment of 2014 couldn’t have been better. Pusha T put on an incredible performance at Echsotage last weekend, playing to a packed house despite taking the stage at close to 1 a.m. I had no idea he was such a charismatic performer, but he really blew me away. This one is definitely going on my best of 2014 list. SHOOTING NOTES: This was my first time at Echostage. They generally do big EDM shows there,…
Last year was my first year shooting the traveling Jingle Ball show (Justin Beiber threw a towel at me!), and while I am not a fan of being in a crowded photo pit with a bunch of photogs that never shoot concerts, the show does provide great access to some of today’s most popular recording artists. And Flo Rida. Last year I spent a majority of my time shooting red carpet photos, but this year I focused…
They say good things come to those who wait, and that was certainly true for me in 2013. I had to wait until the last two weeks of the year to see The Hives play a club show but holy fuck was it worth it. Easily the best show I saw and the best show I shot in 2013. Total perfection. Howlin’ Pelle and company are easily the most photogenic band on the planet today. I hostly…
