Merrill Garbus has carved out quite a creed in a short amount of time as Tune-Yards (no, I’m not using her asinine punctuation) so I was excited to shoot her when she recently came through D.C. for a stop at the 9:30 Club. Turns out her show wasn’t really my thing, but I can see why it appeals to people. She’s very engaging and expressive on stage, and that comes through in these photos. Even though she’s planted behind her equipment, there’s plenty to shoot.
