I’ve shot Jay Z plenty of times in the past, but it’s always an assignment I am excited to get. Jay has a host of hits any rapper not named Kanye would be jealous of and is comfortable in clubs or arenas. He’s always smiling on stage and anytime he’s on stage, it’s an event. But I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know.
SHOOTING NOTES: First two songs and they go pretty quick. The stage is pretty high and there are tiers to deal with. Lights are pretty good, certainly nothing to complain about. He moves about quite a bit and works both sides of the stages. Your best bet is to take a long lens and use the cube-style stage backdrops as backgrounds to isolate him on. There are three video cameramen in the pit, but there’s plenty of room and the only one you really have to worry about is the guy in the middle.
