It’s not everyday that you get to cover a show by the hottest MC in the game. I don’t think anyone can argue that 2 Chainz was the hardest working rapper in the land with his incredible 2012. It seemed like every club banger had a “2 Chainz!” refrain in it somewhere last year.
The crowd at the Fillmore was as hyped as any show I can remember seeing there. It was absolutely packed from front to back and the energy was palpable. This, of course, made for quite a show with lots of singalongs and call and response action between 2 Chainz and the crowd.
I knew 2 Chainz was big, but on stage, oh boy. I was very glad to have my recently purchased 17-35/2.8. 2 Chainz spent a lot of time at the front of the stage and I’m not sure how much of him I could have fit in my 24-70/2.8. He’s THAT TALL. I went with the aforementioned 17-35/2.8 and 70-200/2.8 and that seemed to be a good combo.
Lights and stage set up were great for this show. There was an LCD in front of the DJ and another on the back of the stage. I tried to incorporate them into my shots as much as possible, especially when they flashed the cover of 2 Chainz album. The photo pit was pretty crowded so I stuck to one side and went wide when he was on my side of the stage and zoomed in when he walked to the far side.
This show was a great example of why I love to do this. Earlier in the week I shot Morrissey at Strathmore and a few days later, I’m shooting 2 Chainz a few miles away. You can’t beat that variety.
