As longtime readers know, I am a huge tennis dork, so obviously I was very excited when the HSBC tour announced a date in Washington, D.C. There was no way I was going to miss the “greatest generation” of US tennis together on one court. The event was set up as a 3 match mini-tournament that had Michela Chang facing Pete Sampras in the first match followed by Andre Agassi facing Jim Courier. The two winners, which most people assumed would be Agassi and Sampras, would then face off in the final. This was not to be.
Chang played out of his mind in the first match while Sampras looked a step slow and Chang rolled to a fairly easy win. Sampras didn’t even make it in to the net that much.
The Agassi and Courier match was more fun (and lasted more than 20 minutes) but after playing around in the first part of the match, Agassi couldn’t pull it together in time and Courier beat him in a tiebreak.
After a short break, Chang faced Courier in the final and won handily. I can’t imagine many people paid their money to see Michael play (as great a player as he is) but I have to say I was impressed with his play. Check out the photo gallery below for more photos.
