Somehow this was my first time ever shooting the Black Eye Peas. I was hoping for a spectacle, and I got it, top a degree. Lights were just OK, lots of magenta, which made for a somewhat frustrating experience. There was a stage thrust, and I was able to get the entire group in a few frames, but the light out there was weak and Fergie and Will.i.Am kind of hung in the back and let the other two do the work. I will say this for Fergie, she knows how to work it live. After seeing the group, I understand why they needed her to truly cross over into the mainstream. She’s the only knock ’em dead performer in the group.
My favorite part fo the show–bar none– was Will.I.Am. making the crew wheel a white grand piano on stage, playing it for not more than 45 seconds (hidden by a healthy dose of the fog machine!), and have them wheel it off. Pop stardom everyone! Shooting restrictions for this show were first three songs, shooting from the crowd. I positioned myself at the top of the stairs above the GA pit and was pretty happy there.
