One of the more unusual assignments I’ve received from the Washington Post was photographing How Sweet The Sound, an American Idol-like gospel competition that pits church choirs against each other.
The competition was broken down into two categories, large choirs and small choirs. The small choirs went firt and it was a bit of a challenge to shoot them as they would generally be spread out on a very large stage so it was hard to get everyone in the frame. The large choirs were much easier, with their numbers going up into the 50’s, it was easy to fill up the frame with people singing their heart out.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from this assignment when I went it, but it turned out to be a lot of fun. Each group only did one song, so the pace was quick and there were no shooting restrictions, so I basically had run of the Verizon Center. My only complaint is that the light was non-existent anywhere but on stage, so it was impossible to get any crowd shots, which is a shame because the audience was really into the music.
