After the fiasco that was the Lorde show, I was very much looking forward to shooting Rick Ross at Echostage, even if it meant staying out until 3 in the morning to get the assignment done. It was worth it. Ross is an incredible performer, his stage presence is something you can’t ignore. He knows how to command a stage, and the packed crowd at Echostage was ready to get turnt up.
SHOOTING NOTES: Other than the purple lights (and hip-hop time starting time), this shoot was pretty straight forward. The pit at Echostage is a great size, but I stayed in one spot just off center stage because everyone else in the pit was shooting video and they generally don’t move around at all once they start “filming.” So I grabbed the best spot before Ross hit the stage and stayed there. Funny story: I showed up just as Fat Trel ended his set and had to fight my way into the photo pit (because EVERYONE was trying to get in there so they could get on stage) and one of the security guys looked at me and said “Washington Post, right?” And I’m thinking to myself, “My reputation proceeds me!” And then I get into the pit and realize I am the only (middle-aged) white guy in there, so of course they identified me as the guy from the Post. Oh well, whatever works.
