Mary J. Blige @ Jiffy Lube Live

Mary J. Blige performed at Jiffy Lube Live earlier this week, the last show on the amphitheater’s summer schedule and a sparsely attended one at that. The show was only announced a few weeks ago and it appears that the short lead time was not enough for tickets to reach critical mass. And that’s a real shame because by all accounts, Mary J. turned in one of the area’s best shows of the year. Sadly I had…

Teenage Fanclub

As I’ve said before, Teenage Fanclub has been one of my favorite bands as long as I’ve cared about music, so it was a real treat to be able to interview Norman Blake in person just before their gig at the 9:30 Club last week. As an added treat I had the chance to get a quick photo of the entire band. I had roughly 60 seconds to take this photo, and there are definitely some things…

Harman Center for the Arts Annual Gala

Last Sunday the Shakespeare Theater Company had their annual ball, one of the ritziest in town each year. This year’s ball included an award presented to Annette Bening for her philanthropy efforts, which, of course, meant Warren Beatty was in attendance as well. I was already booked for another event that night, but I stopped in to get some photos of the cocktail hour before the event got underway. Head over to Washongtonian.com to see more of…

Teenage Fanclub @ 9:30 Club

Teenage Fanclub have been one of my favorite bands ever since I picked up a copy of Bandwagonesque way back in 1992. I’ve bought everything they’ve put out since and tried to catch them on their way too infrequent US tours.  last time they came through D.C. was way back in 2005. I was shooting concerts with this camera way back then.  Oh how times have changed. This time around Norman, Ray and Gerry were touring with…

The Vaselines @ 9:30 Club

Most people know The Vaselines from the three songs that Kurt Cobain covered on a few different Nirvana albums. Those people probably don’t know The Vaselines had already broken up before Cobain made them famous. Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee got the band back together in 2008 and released a new album, Sex With An X, earlier this year. This show was the first on their US tour and it was the only show they played with…

How Sweet The Sound @ Verizon Center

One of the more unusual assignments I’ve received from the Washington Post was photographing How Sweet The Sound, an American Idol-like gospel competition that pits church choirs against each other. The competition was broken down into two categories, large choirs and small choirs. The small choirs went firt and it was a bit of a challenge to shoot them as they would generally be spread out on a very large stage so it was hard to get…

Concerts DAR Constitution Hall

Scissor Sisters @ DAR

The Scissor Sisters are a fun shoot no matter when or where they play, so I jumped at the chance to shoot the band at DAR Constitution Hall.  They are always energetic and above all, very photogenic. As always, the restrictions at DAR come in to play with these photos. Photogs are forced to shoot from the aisle, which means the very center of the venue, so it’s impossible to follow the band from side to side…

2010 Virgin Mobile FreeFest

15 bands, 14 hours, numerous photos filed on site and two large Stellas to end the day.  That was my Saturday in a nutshell. This year was the fifth year in a row I’ve covered the Virgin Mobile Festival and I have to say it’s a date I look forward to every year. And unlike previous years, this year’s lineup skewed indie in a big way with LCD Soundsystem, M.I.A., Pavement, Neon Indian, Yeaysayer, Sleigh Bells, and…
