9:30 Club Club Shows Concerts

Jonsi @ 9:30 Club

What’s the only thing worse than not having a photo pit in a club? Having a photo pit and not being able to use it. Such was the case at the Jonsi show at the 9:30 Club. We were instructed to shoot at the edges of the photo pit and were not allowed to switch sides in between songs. Light was very dim during the first song but brightened up a bit for the next two. Jonsi…

Interpol @ DAR

Hitting up DAR Consitution Hall on the tour behind their self-titled fourth album, Interpol played a 18 song set that was filled with old favorites and new cuts. Not shocking I guess that band that makes dark and moody music would have dark and moody stage lighting, but that didn’t make this shoot any easier. We were given the standard “first three, no flash” rule and allowed to shoot from the aisles, meaning we could get down…

M.I.A. @ Virgin Freefest

Given the critical drubbing of her latest album and her response to said critics, M.I.A.’s headlining set at the 2010 Virgin Mobile Freefest was definitely one of the most anticipated performances of the day. And for the brief time I was up front shooting her, I thought she was pretty incredible — full of fire and aggression. Apparently her performance went off the rails not long after I left, but I wouldn’t know as I was sprinting…

Corin Tucker Band @ Black Cat

Taking the stage the night befoe the John Stewart / Stephen Colbert march To Restore Sanity And/Or Fear, the Corin Tucker band played a laid back show to a small but very enthusiastic crowd of Sleater-Kinney fans at the Black Cat. This was one of the best lit shows I’ve ever shot at the Cat. Usually I am forced to use my prime lenses at this venue but for this show I shot with my Nikon 24-70/2.8…

Underworld @ 9:30 Club

I was beyond excited to see and shoot Underworld at the 9:30 Club. The last time I saw Underworld perform was at the 2008 Virgin Mobile Festival and it was one of the best concerts I have ever seen. So naturally I had high hopes for this show. Ultimately this show did not live up to their previous performances lofty heights but that doesn’t mean that this show wasn’t incredible, because it most certainly was. Lots of…

Belle & Sebastian @ DAR

Belle & Sebastian were the last leg of what seemed like a ton of Scottish bands coming through D.C. in the last few weeks. I caught Teenage Fanclub and The Vaselines at the 9:30 Club but missed We Were Promised Jetpacks at the Rock N Roll Hotel. This was my first time shooting Belle & Sebastian and given the restrictions photographers face at DAR, I decided to focus on lead singer Stuart Murdoch first and then get…

LCD Soundsytem @ Virgin Mobile Freefest

For one of the most exciting bands out there, LCD Soundsystem sure can be boring to shoot. They have a ton of gear on stage and tend to hide behind it. James Murphy doesn’t do much proper front man posturing as he performs, but if you know what you are doing, you can still get some great shots of him. One thing I love about shooting Murphy and LCD is his Sennheiser mic. The texture of the…

Gorillaz @ Patriot Center

Despite being an overly enthusiastic Oasis fan and vocal opponent of most of the things Damon Albarn does, i was quite looking forward to last night’s Gorillaz show. It’s hard not to get excited about seeing Bobby Womack, De La Soul and Mos Def perform with the band, which includes Mick Jones and Paul Simonon. Photogs were allowed to shoot songs 5, 6 and 7 of the show, which was good and bad. Good because it’s always…
