Honestly I don’t know what to say about Chris Brown. Judging by the sheer number of teenage girls at his show at the Verizon Center last weekend, he has largely been forgiven for his past transgressions. I’ll leave that debate to other people. An assignment is an assignment. Honestly, this shoot was kind of fun. It’s nice to shoot an arena show every now and then. We were allowed two songs from the pit for this show.…

Black Eye Peas @ Merriweather

Somehow this was my first time ever shooting the Black Eye Peas. I was hoping for a spectacle, and I got it, top a degree. Lights were just OK, lots of magenta, which made for a somewhat frustrating experience. There was a stage thrust, and I was able to get the entire group in a few frames, but the light out there was weak and Fergie and Will.i.Am kind of hung in the back and let the…
Even though this gig took place at the Maryland State Fair, this was pretty much a regular gig. We were allowed to shoot songs 2, 3 and 4 from the pit, but we had to choose a side since there was a ramp extending out from the middle of the stage. Shelton moved around quite a bit during the first song but was fairly stationary for the next three songs. Full photo set below. As always, click…
This was a pretty straight forward shoot. The Strathmore staff told me I was not allowed to move down in front and crouch in front of the first row, so I was stuck in the wings. I was allowed three songs, but I decided to stay put on one side as opposed to running all the way around the venue and trying to get a few photos from the other side. When I do that, people tend…
One of the best (and worst) things about shooting for the Washington Post is going to shoot artists that I know nothing about. Sometimes they aren’t my thing and I hate that particular assignment, sometimes the artist is good but the shooting conditions suck, and every once in a while I get blown away by an act I was totally unprepapred to be blown away by. Like Jessica Lea Mayfield at Iota. I’ll let the Post’s David…

Identity Festival @ Jiffy Lube Live

This was a weird day, and not just because of all the kids in attendance were high on something. Battled through a huge rainstorm to get out there, only to have it reach the venue right when DJ Shadow headlined the second stage. I managed to escape without getting my gear too wet, so I guess it all turned out OK. We were allowed first 15 minutes of each DJ in the photo pit, but most everyone…

My Morning Jacket @ Merriweather
Posted on August 15, 2011
I was dying to shoot his show, seeing as I hadn’t seen My Morning Jacket since 2009 and hadn’t shot them since 2007. The band’s new album, Circuital, didn’t wow me, but I knew their legendary live show would not disappoint. Lighting-wise, this wasn’t the best show to cover, but man, the band (Jim James in particular) were on fire during the first three songs. So. many. hairshots. The top shot here might be my favorite photo of mine…
Perhaps the hottest act in indie music right now, Bon Iver began a sold-out, two night stint at the 9:30 Club on Monday. Lights were LED-tastic, but thankfully there were some cans on the front lip of the stage giving off some yellow hues, which helped make Justin Vernon look less like an alien. There was a small pit for this show, which was nice, but inside it was a video cameraman who was apparently working for…
