Arenas & Sheds Concerts Festivals Merriweather Post Pavilion

2011 Virgin Mobile Freefest

Yes, these photos are months late. I never had a chance to go back and edit the entire set until this week. Honestly I didn’t really want to. I didn’t have much fun at this year’s festival (which is typically my favorite day of the year) and I didn’t want to revisit the photos I took that day. But now with a little distance, I feel differently. My main problem with this year’s festival was the crowds.…

Jay-Z & Kanye West as Watch The Throne

The two biggest rap stars in the world performing together on stage at the same time? Where do I sign up? This week’s Watch The Throne concert from Jay-Z and Kanye West at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. was everything the hype would lead you to believe. Two superstars at the top of their game absolutely killing it (or “going HAM” if you will). This was a very hard shoot but the photos I got were…

St. Vincent @ 9:30 Club

Let’s be honest, it’s hard to take a bad photo of Annie Clark. She’s beautiful and has legs for days. Yes, the under lighting in her current stage set up doesn’t exactly help things, but she’s an easy target. That doesn’t make shooting her live show any less fun. She packed a very sold out 9:30 Club earlier this week and put on a very impressive set (at least from the 5-6 songs I stuck around for). The lighting…

Panic! at the Disco @ 9:30 Club

Halloween shows are always fun, my favorite being a Morrissey show four or 5 years ago in Baltimore where the Mighty Mozzer came out dressed in a tux while his backing band was dressed only in loincloths. Sadly, I did not get to shoot that show. Panic! at the Disco had some fun with their costumes at this gig, especially frontman Brendon Urie, who was dressed as Jesus.  Lighting for this gig wasn’t the greatest. Front lights…

Wilco @ Merriweather

Wilco play the D.C. metro area in one form or another at least once a year, so it’s nothing new for me to shoot these guys. I shot them as a band at Strathmore last March and then shot Jeff Tweedy playing a solo show at the Lincoln Theater later that year. But this time they were touring behind their latest album, The Whole Love. The band generally likes playing in the dark and this time was…

J. Cole @ Fillmore Silver Spring

J. Cole, an up and coming rapper originally from North Carolina, is one of the hottest artists in the game. His debut album just debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and that same week he headlined the Fillmore in Silver Spring. He has an easy presence on stage, not trying too hard, yet he’s able to work the crowd with ease. He had them eating out of his hand from the second he stepped…

Jens Lekman @ 6th & I Synagogue

Jens Lekman is one of my favorite musicians, so I was very excited to see him a few weeks ago at 6th & I Synagogue.  Lens is touring behind his latest release, An Argument With Myself. Aside from the new material, this show was not that different from his last show a few years ago, but that didn’t make me enjoy it any less. Quite the opposite actually. Lights for this show weren’t great, but I did get a chance…

Sunday In The Country 2011

Sunday in the Country is an annual festival held at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD. It features 9 or 10 on-the-verge country acts, generally right before they are about to blow up. For instance, the headliner last year was Lady Antebellum. This year the last three acts were The Band Perry, Joe Nichols and Josh Turner. The Band Perry have big things ahead of them. They reminded me of Lady Antebellum in that they lean more in the…
