I had a very, very bad experience shooting Nick Cave at Strathmore the last time he performed in the greater D.C. area (It’s a long story) and I walked out of the building swearing I would never shoot him again. But yet, there I was a few weeks ago, waiting for the lights to go down and for him and the Bad Seeds to take the stage at DAR. A friend asked me to cover the show at the last minute and since my schedule was free, I was happy to help out. I’m also happy to report this was a much more pleasant experience.
DAR is actually a decent place to shoot a performer like Cave. He moves around the stage quite a bit and the DAR aisles give you the ability to track him around the stage. Shooting over the heads of the people down in front (and EVERYONE rushed down front when the show started) was a hassle but it was workable. Lighting, of course, was very minimal, but there was just enough to work with. Again, not too bad. I am not a fan, so I won’t go out of my way to shoot him again, but never say never.
