A few days after shooting Queens of the Stone Age, I was back at Merriweather to shoot Queen and Adam Lambert. Merriweather was PACKED for this show, I hadn’t seen such a big crowd for a show there in quite some time. The crowd itself was very diverse. It was great to see so many generations of fans in one place to hearQueen run through all the hits in their catalog.
I’ve never watched a single episode of American Idol, so I had no idea what to expect from Adam Lambert. I thought he was good enough, recognizing that no one can or will ever replace Freddie Mercury. Not gonna happen. But he did a credible job, and certainly the younger people in the audience enjoyed him quite a bit.
SHOOTING NOTES: We were allowed three songs from the pit or from the aisles of the amphitheater. We chose the amphitheater option because it gave us a better sight line, more straight on than the designated spot in the pit. It also allowed us to get over the heads of the people in the GA pit on the floor. There was quite a bit of discussion about which option to choose between me and the two other photogs, but in the end we all agreed it was the right choice. Lights were wonderful and Lambert spent a good bit of time near Brian May, letting us all get the shot we needed.
