I confess I stayed very far away from Lana Del Rey until last weekend. The whole hype train crashing into the backlash brigade at the start of her career really left a bad taste in my mouth and didn’t exactly motivate me to check out her work or give two fucks about her. But then I pulled up her music on Spotify a few hours before I headed out to Sweetlife and I was somewhat surprised that I really liked what I heard. So by the time her set rolled around Saturday night, I was more than a little intrigued to see what she had in store.
Her show wasn’t much to speak of, but at least at this point in her career she knows what she’s trying to do. She’s very laid-back and understated on stage, with slow and deliberate movements, but it suits her. The fans down in front in the pavilion were absolutely losing their shit while she performed. I was definitely sensing Morrissey-type vibes from her rapport with the audience. She spent a full two minutes taking selfless with the fans in the front row after the third song (and after we had been escorted from the pit). I had to run and do a few things after the first three so I didn’t get a chance to catch the rest of her set, but I’d definitely give her a shot if she’s coming to your town.
