This was the start of a very unfortunate string of shows at the 9:30 Club with no photo pit. I didn’t know much about Matthew Houck going into this show other than his very well reviewed 2013 album, Muchacho, was incredibly well reviewed. A sold-out crowd was certainly ready for everything he threw at them. Performance-wise, Phosphorescent was pleasant enough, but The Washington Post said the show featured “mournful and achingly majestic modern country,” so you should probably believe them more than me. Houck’s huge cowboy hat and the flat lighting didn’t do me any favors, so I’m a bit biased. I really, really hate cowboy hats.
