Madonna skipped D.C. on her last world tour so I had never even had the chance to shoot her in concert until a few weeks ago. Obviously I was very excited about the announcement. Especially coming just a few days after shooitng another 80’s icon, Bruce Springsteen. Not bad for a 7 day stretch.
Madonna made us photogs wait until songs 8 and 9 to shoot her, but she made everyone wait until 10:30 before she even started the show. Getting out of there at 11:30 was pretty brutal, especially since I was on deadline and had to file as soon as I got home. We were set up from the back of the house, a fair ways from the stage although there was a ramp into the crowd that she came down during the second song. But still, I rented a 400mm and could have used more reach.
Madonna’s current show starts out with all the controversial stuff you’ve heard about from the tour, the guns, the violent imagery and a lot fo new songs. She reappeared for song 8 in a cheerleader outfit singing her hit “Express Yourself” and followed that with a newer song, “Gimme All Your Lovin.” Like most of here show, these were cut down to medley length so we had to work fast. I brought two camera bodies with me thinking I would get some wider shots, but we were so far from the stage I just stuck with the 400.
