After a long month of shooting indie rock shows in small, dimly lit clubs, it’s always nice to get an assignment at the Kennedy Center, where the lights are always great. Getting a chance to shoot gospel legend Mavis Staples is just icing on the cake.
This concert was held in the terrace Theater, a room I had never shot in before. It was a soundboard shoot, so I borrowed a 300mm lens and it worked out perfect. I was able to get a variety of different full bodied vertical shots as well as an assortment of horizontal shots as well. I took a few snaps with my 70-200mm/2.8 VR I just to be safe but it seemed like most of my best shots came from the 300mm.
For a 70 year-old, Staples can sure belt it out, but then, she’s not a gospel legend for nothing. Check out the full photo set below.
