Concerts Lincoln Theatre

Joanna Newsom @ Lincoln Theatre

This was a tough gig to shoot. A two song shooting limit at a seated theatre with a stationary performer meant very limited options as far as sightless and shooting angles. To top it off, Newsom went to the piano at the back of the stage for the second song, so she was hidden by stage gear for a third of our allowed shooting time. The quietness of her show is also limiting. I shot on quiet mode but there’s always someone…

Roger Waters @ DAR

What do you get when you put Roger Waters, Billy Corgan and Tom Morello on stage with a bunch of wounded war veterans? An incredible memorable gig and a very emotional night. This was a very special gig and I was go glad I was able to be in the room covering it. Every year Music Heals puts on a benefit concert for MusiCorps, an organization that uses music therapy to help veterans recovering from wounds sustained in the line of…

Concerts Lincoln Theatre

Foals @ Lincoln Theatre

This was a fun show in a weird venue. I’ve seen more than a few rock shows at the Lincoln since it re-opened in 2013 and most of them have worked but this one really didn’t. This was a great example of a high-energy show where the band wasn’t getting the reciprocal energy from he crowd they were looking for. At one point in the show Yannis basically said “I want to get crazy in here but I can’t,” implying that…

Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings @ Lincoln Theatre

I’ve been on a serious soul/R&B kick the latter part of this year (I’ll publish my favorite albums list a bit later but if I was honest, I listened to A LOT of James Brown this year) so it was natural that I’d be in the house when Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings played D.C. a week ago. This was a holiday show in conjunction with the group’s holiday album and it was awesome and so much fun. Sharon’s had some…

Mew @ 9:30 Club

An internet friend made a mix CD for me way back in the early-to-mid 00’s and he included “Am I Wry? No” by Mew and I absolutely fell in love with that song. I tried to track down as much music from Mew as possible and shortly thereafter they released “And The Glass Handed Kites” and I listened to “Special” something like 400 times in a row. I’ve only seen the band twice since then, once at the Black Cat and once at…

Concerts Rock N Roll Hotel

Pentagram @ Rock N Roll Hotel

This was the type of assignment that is incredibly fun and rewarding but sadly comes along way to infrequently for my liking. The Post did a very comprehensive feature on Bobby Liebling, the 60+-year-old singer of Pentagram that highlights the band’s struggles (and successes!) through his life story. The band hail from Alexandria, VA and Liebling has a million stories from the good ol’ days in D.C., including selling drugs for former D.C. drug kingpin Rayful Edmond. We got to hang out with…

Tove Lo @ 9:30 Club

I love Tove Lo. Love, love, love her. And not just because of my Swedish heritage. Her debut album, Queen of the Clouds, is some of the catchiest, smarter and sexually forward pop music being made these days. She slots in quite nicely between Lykke Li and Robyn. And that’s a great place to be. I caught her at this year’s Sweetlife Festival and didn’t know much about her but was quickly won over. So of course I was excited…

EL VY @ 9:30 Club

These days anything Matt Berninger does is going to generate headlines and draw a crowd, and his latest side-project, EL VY, is no different. D.C. loves The National (remind me to tell you about the time back in 2005-ish I started a rumor that The National hated D.C. because they never played here and it got enough traction that the band formally responded to it), so of course this show as packed. And as usual with all-things-Berninger, the lighting was…
