I’ve been waiting a few years to see White Lies in concert. They haven’t played many shows in the US, and only two that I know of in the D.C. area. One at the Black Cat a few years ago on an NME sponsored tour and once opening for Kings of Leon at Merriweather. I couldn’t make either, so last week’s show at the 9:30 would be my first-ever time seeing them. Verdict: They were pretty good, but not great. They sounded great but the band isn’t much on the stage presence side of things. They basically stand there and play their instruments. That said, I was very happy with the set the chose, which included a good deal of material from their first two albums (the albums I like best). As you can see, they show was mainly backlit, so the band’s faces weren’t lit at all. Plus, this was another show in my run of no photo pit shows at the 9:30. A streak that thankfully came to an end Friday night for the St. Vincent show. Those photos will be up soon.
