I was dying to shoot his show, seeing as I hadn’t seen My Morning Jacket since 2009 and hadn’t shot them since 2007. The band’s new album, Circuital, didn’t wow me, but I knew their legendary live show would not disappoint.

Lighting-wise, this wasn’t the best show to cover, but man, the band (Jim James in particular) were on fire during the first three songs. So. many. hairshots. The top shot here might be my favorite photo of mine all year.

This was without a doubt one of the best shows I’ve seen this year. The weather was perfect, as was the band’s 24 song, almost three hour long set. Can’t wait to see them do it again.

Just wondering from an aspiring concert photographer standpoint – how are you allowed to sell all of these images and place them on your website? Many photo releases I’ve come across only let you use them for the publication you’re shooting for.

      Hi Sara,

Every photo I take is my copyright and I am allowed to sell it for editorial use and also for fine art use (i.e prints to hang on a wall). Selling images as part of an advertising campaign or any non-editorial purpose would require consent of the people in the photo, generally through the band’s management representative. Also, since I am a freelancer for the Post and not a staffer, I ultimately own the copyright to my photos and license my images to the Post to for use (and re-use) in their print publications and websites. I wait until a few days after the concert to post my images so they can get the news value first.

Most of the shows I shoot don’t have photo releases and I comply with the ones that do and specify no selling. I post the images but the photos are not for sale. Since this website is my online portfolio, I am allowed to post the images here. Some photo releases specify no portfolio use and if I can’t talk the artist out of that, I don’t post the photos here. I have a ton of great images no one will ever see because I am not allowed to post them here.

      Thanks for the question!
