For one of the most exciting bands out there, LCD Soundsystem sure can be boring to shoot. They have a ton of gear on stage and tend to hide behind it. James Murphy doesn’t do much proper front man posturing as he performs, but if you know what you are doing, you can still get some great shots of him.
One thing I love about shooting Murphy and LCD is his Sennheiser mic. The texture of the mic against Murphy’s ever-present 5 o’clock shadow presents some interesting textures if you zoom in close enough.
Virgin Mobile Freefestwas my second time shooting LCD at a festival this summer (Pitchfork was the first, obvs) and I certainly enjoyed having more than one song to work with this time around. Lighting was OK, mostly backlit with the occasional spotlight providing coverage from the front.
