Ford’s Theater Gala 2010

American Independence in June! Last month I had the opportunity to cover the red carpet for he annual Ford’s Theater Gala which is a Fourth of July special taped for TV in June to air during the Independence Day Weekend. A host of celebrities were scheduled to appear – Kelly Clarkson, Lionel Richie, George Lopez and Ty Burrell to name but a few – but only Burrell, who was the night’s host, actually made an appearance on the red carpet. Instead we were stuck with the B and C-Listers.

A bevvy of politicians jumped out of their vehicles and ran to the backstage entry door, including Sonia Sotomayor, Eric Holder and Colin Powell.  I managed to snap photos of the latter two but not Sotomayor. Thanks goodness for Desmond Tutu, one of the night’s honorees.  He made up for a lack of red carpet star-power by doing a little dance on the red carpet and just generally being awesome during all of his TV interviews.

Overall this event was very poorly organized. Whether that was because of the Secret Service I can’t say but it kind of defeats the purpose of inviting the media and having a red carpet when all the ticketed guests are instructed to wait in line on the red carpet in order to gain entry to the venue.
